MetaHuman Animator vs Live Link Face for Facial Mocap: A Practical Comparison from an Indie Pipeline

I've spent the past couple months testing both MetaHuman Animator and the older Live Link Face iPhone workflow for a cinematic side project in UE5, and the gap between them is bigger than Epic's marketing suggests, in both directions.

Where MetaHuman Animator Actually Wins

The quality ceiling is genuinely higher. Animator's solve handles subtle brow compression and lip-corner tension in ways that Live Link Face's real-time ARKit blendshapes just can't. For close-up cinematic shots, I'd estimate it saves 30–40% of my manual cleanup time on hero performances.

The batch processing workflow is also solid. Shoot to iPhone, export the .mhanim file, process offline. No need to babysit a live session.

Where It Frustrates Me

  • Processing time is brutal on complex takes. A 90-second clip on my RTX 3080 takes 8–12 minutes to solve. Live Link Face is obviously instant.
  • The solve quality degrades noticeably in profile angles past about 45 degrees. Occlusion handling is still rough. Epic says they're improving this but I haven't seen meaningful progress in the last two point releases.
  • If you're on a non-MetaHuman skeleton, you're on your own. The retargeting story is still awkward.

My Current Hybrid Approach

I use Live Link Face for blocking and director review passes (fast iteration, good enough at normal shot distances), then re-record hero takes with the Animator workflow for final polish. Best of both, honestly.

Curious whether anyone has found a reliable way to use Animator-quality solves with custom rigs, or whether you're just committing to the MetaHuman ecosystem entirely. Also wondering if anyone's compared this against Faceware or Sface at a similar budget point.

Good writeup. One thing I'd add that burned me early on with MetaHuman Animator: the stabilization pass matters a lot more than Epic's tutorials suggest. Raw iPhone capture, even with MHA, will have high-frequency jitter in the eye and jaw curves that reads fine on a phone screen but looks twitchy on a cinematic close-up.

My current fix is running a light Gaussian smooth on the problematic curves in the curve editor after import, but only on frequencies above about 12fps. Below that is usually intentional micro-expression. Takes maybe 10 minutes per shot and makes a real difference. Also worth checking: if your subject wears glasses, MHA struggles badly with the eye region and you'll want to rebuild those curves by hand or comp them separately.

Live Link Face is just not in the same league for offline cinematic work at this point. The only case I'd still use it is for real-time previsualization where turnaround speed beats quality.

the phone mount point is huge and nobody talks about it. I was handholding the phone freehand at first and the micro-shake from my hands was getting baked in as facial movement data. switched to a head-mounted rig (zip-tied to a hat, not even joking) and the raw capture improved dramatically before I even touched the stabilization pass. Epic's tutorials really gloss over the physical capture setup
